P1, P2, P3 on PlayStation: Activation Types and Risks
P1, P2 and P3 are PlayStation account activation types that differ in how much access to the games you get. P1 gives full offline access on your console, P2 is online-only rental, and P3 lets you play from your own account through a "primary console" activation.
What P1, P2 and P3 actually are
This is how sellers label the way access to games is handed over. The system rests on Sony's licensing mechanics: a game is tied either to the owning account or to a console. The activation type decides your rights — from full access down to a temporary rental.
P1 — full offline access
With P1 the seller hands over the account holding the game, and you set it as your "primary console". The game then works on the console without an internet connection, for any user profile. You get the login and password, can change the details (unless the seller forbids it), play offline and earn trophies on your own profile. The game stays with you until you remove the seller's account from the console.
Upsides: no internet needed after activation, play from your own account, trophies on your profile, multiplayer (with PS Plus).
Downsides: you have to hand over console access while it is set up, and the same game cannot be played on another console under the seller's account. If the activation is reset — Sony allows changing the primary console once every six months — it may need setting up again.
P2 — rental with an online check
P2 is access to the game over the internet only. You sign in to the seller's account on your console but do not make it primary. Every 15 minutes the console verifies the licence. If the connection drops or the seller revokes access, the game locks. Trophies and progress stay on the seller's account — you play under it, not on your own profile.
Upsides: low price, does not use up a primary console slot.
Downsides: a constant connection is required, the game is not on your account (trophies and saves are someone else's), and access can vanish at any moment. Multiplayer only works if the seller's account has PS Plus, and under their name.
P3 — console activation, playing from your own account
P3 is the compromise. You sign in to the seller's account on your console and make it primary there. The seller's account becomes the primary one on your console, so its games are available to your user profiles. You play from your own profile, offline, and trophies come to you. The seller's account itself stays with them.
Upsides: play from your own account, offline, and you do not hand over your own credentials — only console access while it is set up. Cheaper than P1.
Downsides: the seller's account takes up the primary console slot on your machine (only one PS4 or one PS5 can be primary for a given account). If the seller revokes the activation, the game disappears.
How Sony's licensing works
Sony uses two kinds of licence: one tied to an account and one tied to a console. When you buy a game on PSN it is attached to your account. For other users on the same console to play it, that account has to be set as the console's "primary" one. Then every account on that console gets access to the owner's games.
P2 works the opposite way: if the account is not primary, the game only launches with an active connection and a licence check every 15 minutes. Lose the connection and the game locks.
That is why P1 and P3 need no internet during play — the licence is tied to the console. P2 does not work without it.
P1, P2, P3 on PS5: how it differs from PS4
The system is the same on PS5, with a few wrinkles. Sony lets one account activate one PS4 and one PS5 at the same time. If you own both, you can reach the games on both by activating the seller's account as primary on each.
On PS5 you cannot set up P1 if the seller has already used up the primary console change limit (once every six months). Before buying P1 for PS5, check that the limit is not exhausted.
Some games offer cross-buy between PS4 and PS5. With P1 activated on PS4, the PS5 version may not work — that is worth checking.
The risks of buying P1, P2 and P3
The seller revoking the licence. A common risk: the seller can change the password, revoke the activation or sell the same account to someone else. For P2 this is critical — access disappears instantly. For P1 and P3 the risk is lower.
An account ban. If you use P1 and play online, Sony may flag unusual activity (a sign-in from another region, frequent console changes) and block the account. Rare, but possible.
Losing progress on P2. All saves and trophies stay on the seller's account. If access goes, the progress goes with it.
A region mismatch. Games may be from the Turkish, Indian or another region. DLC or multiplayer may not work if your main account belongs to a different region.
Common situations, explained
If the game crashes with a "licence not found" error
On P2 this happens during a brief connection failure, or if the seller revoked access. On P1 and P3 the error appears when the primary console activation has been reset. The fix: sign back in to the seller's account and check the activation status in PSN settings. If the activation is gone, ask the seller to set it up again.
How to check which activation type a purchased game uses
Open your console settings, go to "Account Management" and select "Activate as Your Primary PS5/PS4". If the button is active, no activation is in place and the game runs under P2. If the button is greyed out and says "Deactivate", the activation is there — that is P1 or P3.
Can I play the same game on PS4 and PS5 with one activation?
Yes, if the game supports cross-buy. A PS4 purchase can give access to the PS5 version, for example. But with P1 on PS4 the PS5 version will not appear automatically — the same account has to be activated as primary on the PS5 too. Mind the limit: one PS4 and one PS5 at a time.

Buyers often confuse P1 and P3, assuming P1 is permanent and P3 is a rental. Both give offline access from your own account, but P1 is a full handover of the account while P3 is only a console activation. If you want the game for years, take P1. If you want to finish one or two games, P3 costs less.

Can I play multiplayer on P1?

What is the "padlock" on a game and why does it appear?
The padlock means there is no licence for the game on this console. That happens when the primary console activation has been reset — the seller moved it elsewhere, for instance — or when a P2 rental has expired.
Can I move progress from P2 to my own account?
No. Saves and trophies belong to the account you played under. There is no official way to move them to another account.
How many consoles can be activated at once?
One account can be primary on one PS4 and one PS5 at the same time. If you own both, P1 can be activated on each — but the seller has to grant access separately for each platform.
