What PlayStation Plus is and why you need it
PlayStation Plus is Sony's paid subscription for multiplayer access on PlayStation consoles. Without it you get single-player games and local co-op only.

For GTA Online the cheapest tier — Essential — is enough. Extra and Deluxe add a game catalogue but change nothing about online access.
Which PS Plus features actually matter for GTA Online
Of everything in the subscription, only one thing matters here: permission to play online. Cloud storage is useful when changing consoles but does not affect play. The monthly games have nothing to do with GTA Online.
From experience. People arrive here with three different questions they treat as one: "do I need PS Plus for GTA Online", "can I play on Essential" and "is GTA Online paid on PS5". The distinction matters: the game and its online mode are free, but going online on PlayStation requires a subscription — any of them, including the cheapest Essential. So paying extra for Extra or Deluxe purely for GTA Online makes no sense.
Do you need a PS Plus subscription for GTA Online?
Yes. Sony requires PS Plus for any multiplayer mode.
The one exception: Rockstar free weekends and promotions
Rockstar and Sony occasionally run promotions where GTA Online is available without a subscription. They last a few days and are announced in advance. Do not count on them regularly — they come around once every few months.
Can you play GTA Online without PS Plus on PS4 and PS5? The difference
The rule is the same on both consoles: the subscription is mandatory either way, and it makes no difference whether the game is on disc or digital.
What about GTA+? It is not the same thing
GTA+ is Rockstar's in-game subscription, and it does not replace PS Plus. It grants bonuses inside GTA Online but does not unlock online access.

What happens if you cancel PS Plus?
Access to GTA Online is blocked
Trying to go online produces an error message. The GTA V story mode stays available.
Progress and saves are kept
All data lives on Rockstar's servers and is not going anywhere. If PS Plus cloud storage was active, story mode saves stay too. Resume the subscription and you return to the same progress.
Can you come back after a break? Yes
You can pause for as long as you like. The moment you take out PS Plus again, GTA Online is waiting in exactly the same state.

Rockstar runs free weekends from time to time. Follow Rockstar's announcements or watch the PlayStation Store. That buys you a few free days a year.
Buy PS Plus during Sony's seasonal sales
Sony discounts the subscription several times a year — in summer, in autumn and around New Year. The discount on an annual plan can be substantial.
Use shared console access
On a single console you can set an account with PS Plus as the primary one, and then everyone using that console can play online. If a friend or family member has PS Plus, ask them to make your console their primary. This is a legitimate way to play without your own subscription.
