PS Plus Has Expired: What Happens to Games and Saves

When PS Plus expires, catalogue games stop launching, but saves, trophies and purchased games stay exactly where they were. Nothing is deleted: access to the catalogue simply closes until you renew. Below, tier by tier, what disappears, what stays forever, and why some games may not come back even after renewal.

Three kinds of games, three different outcomes

The confusion almost always comes from the fact that "games on the console" means three different things, and the subscription treats each one differently:

  • Purchased games — you paid for them separately. Yours forever; the subscription has no bearing on them at all.
  • Monthly games — the ones given away each month. They stay in your library forever, but only launch while the subscription is active.
  • Extra and Deluxe catalogue games — access for the length of the subscription. It ends, access closes.

Each one in detail below.

From experience. This question brings more people to us than any other, and almost everyone phrases it differently. Over three months this page was reached with searches like "do games stay forever", "are games deleted when the subscription ends", "will games stop working after expiry", "is a PS Store game permanent", "what is the point of the subscription if everything disappears in a year". Twenty different wordings and one and the same fear: that what was paid for will vanish. So, in plain words: access disappears, files and progress do not. The console erases nothing; the launch button simply stops working until you renew.

What goes and what stays

WhatAfter the subscription ends
Extra and Deluxe catalogue gamesWill not launch until renewal
Essential monthly gamesStay, if you claimed them while subscribed
Games you bought yourselfStay forever, unaffected by the subscription
Saves on the consoleStay
Cloud savesStay, but syncing stops
TrophiesStay, they are tied to the account
Online playUnavailable until renewal

The main thing to remember: nothing is deleted. The game stays installed on the drive; launching it simply offers you a subscription instead.

Essential monthly games are a special case

There is a subtlety here that causes most of the disappointment.

Monthly games have to be claimed while they are being offered. If you pressed "Add to library", the game is yours forever — but it only runs with an active subscription. If you did not claim it, it simply passed you by, and it cannot be claimed retroactively.

So it is more accurate to say monthly games "stay in your library forever but only launch with an active subscription", rather than "stay forever".

Why some games did not come back after renewal

This is not a fault. The Extra and Deluxe catalogue rotates: games are added and removed under agreements with publishers. If a game left the catalogue while you were not subscribed, it will not reappear after renewal — it is no longer there.

What you can do about it:

  • check whether the game is sold separately — the purchased version will pick up your progress;
  • look again later: games do sometimes return to the catalogue.

Your saves stay put regardless, waiting, even if the game has left the catalogue for good.

An important note: games leave the catalogue while your subscription is active too. Sony warns about this in advance, usually a few weeks ahead. If a game disappeared while your subscription is fine, the reason is not payment — it is the end of a deal with the publisher.

Cloud saves: the one thing worth watching

Cloud storage is part of the subscription. Once it ends:

  • saves already uploaded are not deleted immediately, but nothing new is sent there;
  • if you leave it unrenewed for a long time, Sony may clear the cloud — usually with an email warning first.

The practical takeaway: before a long break, copy important saves to a USB drive or leave them on the console's internal storage. Local saves do not depend on the subscription at all.

How to copy: "Settings" → "Saved Data and Game/App Settings" → "Saved Data (PS5)" → "Copy to USB Drive".

What happens with Deluxe and Premium

The higher tiers also lose access to the classics catalogue and, where available, to cloud streaming. The mechanics are the same: access closes, progress remains.

The difference between the tiers is covered in the article on Essential, Extra and Deluxe.

How to get access back

Renewing brings back everything still in the catalogue — no extra steps needed, the games simply launch again. You do not need to download them again either, as long as you did not delete them.

We set up PS Plus on your own account, priced in USD and paid in crypto: no foreign card of your own required, and we need account access for a few minutes.

We'll process it in 15–30 minutes, pay with USDT

If the break is going to be a long one, compare prices across regions — the gap there is usually wider than the gap between tiers: where PS Plus costs less.

Frequently asked questions

Will my saves be deleted when the subscription ends?

No. Local saves stay on the console; cloud saves are not deleted immediately but stop updating. Before a long break it is worth copying the important ones to a USB drive.

Do trophies stay?

Yes, trophies are tied to the account and do not depend on the subscription.

Will the games I bought myself disappear?

No. The subscription only affects catalogue games and online play. Games you bought stay yours.

Why will a game not launch even though I downloaded it?

A downloaded file and the right to run it are two different things. A catalogue game stays on the drive but will not start without an active subscription.

Will my progress return if I renew six months later?

Yes, progress will be picked up — provided the game is still in the catalogue. If it has left, your saves will wait until you buy the game separately.

Can I claim monthly games after the subscription ends?

No. They can only be claimed during the giveaway period and only with an active subscription. How to renew is covered in the article on renewing PS Plus.
